Specifying a crawl rule

The enterprise search in SharePoint Server uses crawl rules that determine how it crawls a particular set of content from a content source. Crawl rules give you the ability to specify the behavior of the search index engine when it crawls content in a particular path.

Note    You can use the asterisk (*) as a wildcard character in crawl rules. For BDC content sources, you should use the path bdc2://* because it is the reserved path for all items retrieved from BDC content sources.

To add a crawl rule:

  1. Open SharePoint Central Administration.
  2. In the left pane, click the name of the Shared Services Provider that you want to configure (for example, SharedServices1).
  3. Click Search administration. The Search Administration page appears.
  4. In the Crawling group in the left pane, click Crawl rules. The Manage Crawl Rules page appears.
  5. Click New Crawl Rule. The Add Crawl Rule page appears.
  6. Click options or type values using the descriptions in the following table.
